'Baahubali: The Conclusion', on location report

Article Credits : Screendaily.com

The first part of SS Rajamouli’s Telugu-language epic, Baahubali: The Beginning, stormed the Indian box office and sold to 30 territories. Now the follow-up has set its sights on further international success.

A Mahishmati king, covered in the bloody gore and deep gashes of battle, is standing in front of a monitor reviewing a playback of his last scene. Seemingly satisfied, he strides back out to the set of Baahubali: The Conclusion, an ancient Indian citadel on a backlot of Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City, which is suitably immense but somewhat truncated. After all, mighty statues, pillars and other pieces of medieval masonry only need to soar so high before they are finished off with visual effects.

“We’ve built everything that the actors need to physically interact with,” explains Shobu Yarlagadda, producer of two-part Telugu-language epic Baahubali. “Everything else you see on screen is CGI.”

It was a combination of VFX spectacle and director SS Rajamouli’s epic storytelling - which recalls Hollywood blockbusters of the era of the original Ben-Hur - that made the first part of the combined $50m production, Baahubali: The Beginning, such a success.

Produced by Yarlagadda’s Arka Mediaworks, the film opened in July 2015 and grossed around $85m in India across versions in three languages (Telugu, Tamil and Hindi). A slightly shorter international version, edited by France’s Vincent Tabaillon and handled by former EuropaCorp executive Francois Da Silva, received wide festival play and was sold to 30 territories. It has grossed around $12m in 10 territories, with releases in South Korea and Japan scheduled for the second quarter of 2017.

What’s remarkable about these numbers is that they were achieved without international stars. Prabhas, who plays the hero Baahubali, and Rana Daggubati, who plays the villain Bhallaladeva, are huge in the Telugu and Tamil-speaking states of southern India, but don’t guarantee box office in the Hindi-speaking north.

However, a Hindi-dubbed version of the film, presented to local audiences by Bollywood producer Karan Johar, shattered records for a dubbed version of a southern film by grossing $18m. “We expected gradual pick-up in the Hindi-speaking states, so it was a big surprise when it became an immediate hit,” says Rajamouli. “I think it worked because audiences are not used to seeing this kind of scale and visual extravagance in an Indian movie; and they could relate to the characters and their emotions at a basic level.”

The film also worked well with the Indian diaspora, despite the fact overseas Indians mostly follow Bollywood (ie Hindi-speaking) stars, and found success in some territories such as Taiwan that don’t have a large Indian community. “We had confidence in our product and knew they’d like it if they came to the theatres,” says Rajamouli. “We just didn’t know if we could market it well.”

The critical response, both in India and overseas, suggests that, apart from the spectacle, audiences were drawn to what is basically a rollicking good story, along with Prabhas’s portrayal of the muscle-bound hero as charming and relatable, rather than distant and stoic.

OVERSEAS AMBITIONS:

Although pleased with the international reception - in the US, the film grossed around $7m across the three language versions - Yarlagadda says he is expecting bigger overseas box office for the second part, Baahubali: The Conclusion, which is shooting now and scheduled for release in India on April 28, 2017.

While the first part performed strongly in some territories, Yarlagadda feels it could have gone further in others. “Germany, for example, had a lukewarm theatrical response, although DVD sales were strong,” he explains. China box office was also lower than expected as the film had its release date postponed, and eventually went up against Jackie Chan’s Skiptrace and popular Japanese animation Doraemon. “But I feel like we made inroads in some of these territories and we’re hoping the second part will have a greater impact. At least we’ve raised awareness and people are talking about the film.”

Rajamouli explains that the second part was always going to focus more on drama and emotions - as it will resolve several story threads from the first part - but after seeing how much audiences loved the first film’s epic battle scenes, he realised he would also have to crank up the action quotient.

“It was written as a story in two parts; this is not a sequel, but after the success of the first part we revisited the script,” says Rajamouli, who wrote the film with his father Vijayendra Prasad (who also wrote Bhaijaan Bajrangi, the biggest Hindi hit of 2015). “We’ve made the action scenes bigger but the basic storyline remains the same.”

Around 40% of Baahubali: The Conclusion was filmed at the same time as the first part, at Ramoji Film City and other locations in India and Bulgaria. Located on the outskirts of Hyderabad, the heart of the Telugu film industry, Ramoji is one of the world’s largest studio complexes, housing soundstages, palaces, temples and many other outdoor sets spread over a 2,000-acre site.

Founded by producer and media mogul Ramoji Rao, the studios also part-financed Baahubali through a loan and in-kind services. Yarlagadda and his producing partner Prasad Devineni have managed to pull together mostly the same cast and crew for the second part - no mean feat given the busy schedules of actors and technicians in the Telugu and Chennai-based Tamil film industries.

Tabaillon is also on board again to cut an international version. However, VFX supervisor Srinivas Mohan had a prior commitment to work with Tamil star Rajinikanth and director Shankar on Robot 2.0. He has been replaced by another long-time Rajamouli collaborator, Kamal Kannan, who is working with VFX houses including Hyderabad-based Makuta, Chennai-based Prasad EFX, WOPR in Denmark and Post Modern in Ukraine.

FRANCHISE TREATMENT :

Also keeping Yarlagadda busy is a wide range of ancillary and transmedia products, including comics, novels, mobile games and an animated TV series, some of which Arka is developing jointly with Graphic India, owned by Liquid Comics and Peter Chernin’s CA Media.

“We’ve spent a long time developing the back stories,” says Yarlagadda. Arka has also teamed with US-based AMD and John Griffith’s CNCPT on a VR film, the first scenes of which will be released in October, and is in talks with Awesome Rocketship to roll out VR pods across India to help local audiences experience the film.

All this activity marks the first time a film property has been given the full-blown franchise treatment in India. But Yarlagadda says we shouldn’t expect to see a flood of blockbusters out of Hyderabad just yet.

Rajamouli has already spent four years working on the two films, including more than a year developing an original story, which is inspired by Indian mythology but not based on existing texts. “There aren’t many film-makers in India who will devote that much time to one project - or who can convince cast and crew to put their lives on hold,” Yarlagadda explains.

Rajamouli, who previously directed a string of hits across different budget ranges, says he is likely to make something smaller for his next project. But whatever he turns his hand to, he can rest assured that he has already changed perceptions of Indian cinema globally.

“Before Baahubali, most people around the world were only aware of Bollywood, but now they know there’s a film industry in south India that makes its own kind of films,” he says. “We’re quite proud of that.”

Walk Through Mahishmathi in VR

You Can Walk Through the Kingdom of Baahubali With These New Virtual Reality Films

The first look of Baahubali 2 is going to be unveiled at the Jio MAMI film festival in Mumbai on October 22nd by director SS Rajamouli in the presence of the entire team. The excitement is mounting also because of the peek viewers will get, into the special Virtual Reality (VR) experience that is being created for the movie.

Producers Arka Media Works are leaving no stone unturned to take the movie's viewing experience to a whole new level in the country.

Shobu Yarlagadda, CEO Arka Media Works, says: "2 VR films are being made to bring the movie closer to the audiences. The first is a behind-the-scenes VR video which will be released on October 22 at Mami. The second is a VR film that will be a photorealistic VR experience with a separate storyline. The VR will enable audiences to explore the themes and storyline of the film, giving them a feeling of being inside the kingdom of Mahishmathi in the World of Baahubali. We are collaborating with AMD and Radeon Technologies for this."

The entire VR shoot is being meticulously planned and will be shot in the next 2 months. So what does a VR shoot entail? "We have procured special cameras for this purpose, built by AMD. There are two phases of a shoot for a VR Film, namely, a Live Action shoot and building a full CG environment in a game engine. After both phases are completed, the live action will be merged into the full CG part in the game engine. The shooting of these two phases includes many elements like motion capture, digital and CG doubles and many more such technologies. We have had to create special workflows and processes for this production, involving teams and special studios from Los Angeles. John Griffith CNCPT LA will supervise and give directions to the various VR teams," explains Shobu.

The goal of the entire effort is to transport the audience into the kingdom for them to enjoy the experience of time travel into the streets and palaces along with the fictional characters of Baahubali.

But how will this VR experience for this tri-lingual film (Telugu, Tamil and Hindi), reach the audiences? "We are talking to various international partners, who create VR based hardware and pods which can screen the VR film," says Shobu.

"We are looking to make the VR experience available in pods and booths in around 300 venues around the country first. We are right now in the process of deciding various venues, where people can come and enjoy the VR experience. Locations we are looking at include popular multiplexes and malls," he adds.

With their unique vision, planning and passion for cinema, team Baahubali seems intent on taking the movie experience to a whole new level in the country. As for us, we can't wait for October 22.

200 Cr Pre-Release Business for Baahubali 2 ?

Baahubali 2 pre-release business: AP/T, US, Karnataka rights sold for Rs 200 crore?

SS Rajamouli's Baahubali: The Conclusion (Baahubali 2), starring Darling Prabhas is doing superb pre-release business, and is likely to fetch Rs 200 crore from its theatrical rights for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (AP/T), Karnataka and US.

Baahubali: The Beginning has been a massive success at the box office. The film grossed Rs 174.35 crore at the AP/T box office and earned Rs 113.75 crore for its distributors in its life time. The movie raked in Rs 79.20 crore gross in Karnataka and its distributors' share stands at Rs 39.50 crore. The movie collected Rs 55.75 crore at the US box office and its distributors' share is Rs 36.24 crore.

The first installment in the Baahubali film series has grossed Rs 309.3 crore in these areas and fetched Rs 189.49 crore. Half of its total collection (Rs 650 crore gross) came from these four regions, which are considered as the most potential markets for Baahubali series.

Hence, there has been huge demand and competition for its theatrical rights of these regions. Several leading distribution houses have been in talks with the producers of Baahubali 2 for the past few months and are quoting record prices for the rights of these areas.

The buzz in the industry is that the makers of Baahubali 2 have finalized the deals of its theatrical rights of most of the areas of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. They are now working on the deals of remaining regions. "Baahubali 2 is likely to fetch Rs 115 crore to Rs 120 crore from the sale of its distribution rights for the Telugu States.

A distributor has quoted Rs 40 crore for its distribution rights of North America rights. Its Karnataka theatrical rights are likely to fetch over Rs 45 crore," says a trade expert from the industry.

"In its pre-release business, Baahubali 2 is likely to earn over Rs 200 crore for its producers from the sale of its distribution rights of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Karnataka and US. These are the all-time highest prices paid to the theatrical rights of any Indian language film for these areas," the trade analyst adds.

Another Big Deal For Baahubali

Ace director SS Rajamouli's Baahubali: The Beginning had smashed all box office records and is still the highest south Indian grosser. Tollywood analysts have introduced a new term 'Non-Baahubali records', as it is highly impossible for any film to reach the heights of the Prabhas and Rana starrer.

Perhaps to take part in the Baahubali series or to take advantage of first part, distributors are spending mammoth prices to obtain distribution rights. Now Om Manikanta films has acquired Baahubali: The Conclusion East Godavari rights by shelling out ever best price for the area of Rs 9.6 crore as an outright deal, which means the distributor can't claim for reimbursement from producers if he incur losses.

Seems like, Baahubali 2 pre-release business will easily cross the full run shares of the beginning part. So, producers will pocket massive profits prior to the film's release. Rajamouli never disappointed producers, buyers and audiences hitherto.

But, pressure will be high on him as expectations are sky high on Baahubali 2. Hope, he will not disappoint this time too!

Extraordinary action sequences in Baahubali 2 : Rana

Actor Rana Daggubati says the action sequences in the upcoming second instalment of Baahubali are bigger and better than the first part.

Baahubali: The Conclusion is the second and final part of the multi-lingual film, directed by SS Rajamouli. “The action scenes in ‘Baahubali 2’ will make the first film look small. They have been amazingly shot and are mind blowing. We were left awestruck while filming them, so I can imagine how the audience will be blown away by them,” Rana told PTI in an interview.

The 31-year-old actor said the fans should expect a far more enthralling experience than the film as its scale is much larger than the first movie.

“The second film will bring a totality to the story. People will get to know why Kattapa killed Baahubali! And the other interesting aspect is the large scale, which is far bigger than the prequels.

“During the first time we were experimenting, things weren’t established, but now ‘Baahubali’ has become a brand so, we have shot it accordingly,” he said.

On his own physical transformation, Rana said it took him six-eight months to get the bulkier look. “It was a lot of hard work. When we started I was already fitter, but they needed more…It took six-eight months of aggressive training and strict diet,” he said.

Baahubali: The Conclusion will hit the theatres on April 28, 2017.

Baahubali, now in virtual reality

Director S.S. Rajamouli, who hopes to free cinema from being a theatre experience, is excited at how Virtual Reality (VR) has helped in pushing cinematic boundaries.

“I am very excited about the work we are doing in the Virtual Reality space with Baahubali. We are currently working on 2 VR experiences,” Rajamouli wrote on his Twitter page.

VR is a computer generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with. Through this technology, Rajamouli will offer audiences a feeling of being present on the sets of Baahubali.

“Virtual Experience of being on Baahubali sets! This is being captured on a high-end VR camera built by AMD Radeon. It will be released on October 22 (on the occasion of Prabhas’s birthday). The second is a 3D photo-realistic VR experience built in a game engine and set in the climax of Baahubali 2. This will be accessible just before the release of the second part,” he wrote.

With VR, Rajamouli assures one can interact with the Baahubali world like never before. “We are working on ways to make these experiences easily and widely available,” he added.

Baahubali 2 is slated to release in cinemas on April 28, 2017.
